Jake & Luke with their Dad who made the ultimate sacrifice for his country

Our Story:

In May of 2006, a flight school friend of mine, Maj. Matt Worrell was shot down and killed while flying a combat mission in Iraq.  He was survived by his wife, Camille, and two sons, Jake and Luke.  After Matt’s death, I decided to do something to make a positive change in not only Jake and Luke’s lives, but in the lives of thousands of other children who have lost their parent and role model.  Guide On stands in the gap left by the fallen parent, providing relief for the surviving spouse and unique activities for the children.

Our Purpose:

Guide On was established to support families of fallen United States military service men and women by providing leadership training and outdoor activities to the children who have experienced the death of a serving military parent.

Some of Our Past Events:

Thanks to our wonderful sponsors and volunteers, our events have been truly amazing. Please visit our Memories page for pictures from many of them.

♦ Supercross

Monster Energy Supercross Geico Honda PitGuide On has had the privilege of taking families to Monster Energy Supercross events. The roar of powerful dirtbike engines. The heat from the special effects flames on the field. Tons of Monster Energy in the air. This has been a treat for sure. Many thanks to Motoworld, the San Diego Holes for Heroes, and Geico Honda for making this memorable event possible.

♦ USS Midway

USS Midway at PierA favorite, Guide On families have enjoyed touring the USS Midway. This year was extra special with a Picnic by the Sea, a special film showing and simulator rides as well.

♦ Quads Day

Friends Enjoying a Day on the TrackGuide On families have always enjoyed the chance to ride dirt bikes and quads themselves. Bob and Bobbie have really enjoyed sharing this with them. Our thanks to the volunteers who have come out and made this happen and fixed up a great barbecue.

♦ Coronado Speedfest

Picture in Front of the BMW Pace CarThe families of Guide On have found another treat on the tarmac of the Naval Air Station North Island, the birthplace of Naval Aviation. Thanks to Fleetweek San Diego and Tom Sears for making this unique opportunity possible.

♦ Fall Camp on Catalina Island

Excitement on the Catalina ExpressLast year, Guide On Families were treated to a Fall Camp over on Catalina Island. The kids really enjoyed the ride over, the hiking, and swimming. Rumors have it Lilly's impression of a dolphin during a game of charades around a beach campfire was impressive.

♦ Christmas Party

Riding in Style on a Restored Carlsbad FiretruckThe Optimist Club of Carlsbad and Vista have blessed the children of our Guide On family for at least 8 years now. I'm sure the shouts of joy and glee from the kids have been quite rewarding. The dinner has also been quite nice. Thanks to Tom Sears and the Optimist Clubs for making the kids' Christmas' more special.

♦ Summer Camp in Montana

Summer Camp Group Picture on the Steps of the Bighorn LodgeGuide On Summer Camps have always held a special spot in the heart of James Clark, our Guide On Founder. Kids have gotten to enjoy stand up paddle boarding, whitewater rafting, rock climbing, and target shooting (to name a just a few events). Mom's have appreciated the events, many with tears as they see their kids gobbling up the new experiences... okay and the fabled, delicious food served a Bighorn in Montana.

♦ Winter Camp in Montana

Winter Camp Picture - Snow on MountainsThis past year, James Clark tried something different, Winter Camp at Bighorn. No trips down the icy river or hikes through the frozen tundra, but families enjoyed skiing and snowboarding at Whitefish, more Bighorn food, New Year's festivities complete with fireworks and line dancing, and oh yeah sledding Montana-style. Memorable trip indeed.
